New BMW Water Cooled Boxer Engine For The GS in 2012

What’s going to happen with our present Air-Cooled boxer engine in 2012? There’s a number of rumours about it but none has yet been confirmed. A couple of months ago I wrote an article about this on my other blog and had quite some feedback, some saying it’s time they go water-cooled, some saying that so will finish the era of a great engine, etc …. etc …… What’s the reality?

No one knows as yet, apart from the engineers at the same BMW factory 😛 At the beginning of this year, I was at a motorcycle fair and was talking with one of the BMW sales people and told me that he’s seeing it strange that after the upgrade they did in 2010, BMW will change again so soon. In another blog I also came across an article saying that there is a water-cooled being worked on at present but not only, it’s said as well that the 1200 engine, the one used on the R1200GS and the R1200RT will be replaced by a 1300!

That’s interesting to see but my question is this ……. does the GS, being used for both on-road and off-road needs a bigger engine? Is it still going to remain an enduro bike? Do we really need that power for off-road use? I would love to see that engine on an RT but I’m a bit sceptical about the real use of such an engine on the GS. To be honest, even though I still prefer much more, esthetically, the R1200GS, I still feel that the R1200GS is more of a “show-off, look and take care of me properly” kind of bike 🙂 I’ve had the honour to test drive the 1200 and I now ride an 1150, both bikes are great but still say that the 1150 is more robust for rough terrain!

Do you own an R1150GS, an R1200GS or both? Share with us your views on these 2 bikes! What are you hoping to see in the 2012 model?

*** Update as at 18.11.11
Guys, Gals, I was at the EICMA this month and asked to have some news about the new water-cooled boxer engine. This guy at the BMW stand told me that there should be no major changes within the next year / year and a half, thus am assuming that we won’t see this new GS with the new water-cooled engine before 2013. It means that our beloved air-cooled boxer will still be around for some time and those who are dreaming of owning a new R1200GS with an air-cooled engine still have time until at least end of next year! Wish your dreams will come true!

  2. I own the 2012 R1200GS and I wouldn’t want a liquid cooled GS but I will probably buy the RT, when the liquid boxer comes out. I think that in 2013, in the fall of 2012, they will show the new design. It would be appropriate, because 1300cc will line up with year 2013. I don’t see having a liquid cooled boxer on a GS survival bike. I think the boxer was special because it cooled with this big heads in the air. Liquid cooled boxer to me is just picture now, it does not seem to be useful any more then a brick engine. I also didn’t like smooth sides and the change of heads and intake, for me it was ugly, RT cowling will hide that. I was also looking at the GT straight 6, since i already have the boxer engine from BMW.

  3. I own a 2011 1200GS. It is one year old and is probably the best all round bike i have ever owned. I feel, for this type of bike, it does not need more power, the acceleration is very good. I have also owned a 2005 1200RT, and feel this would realy benefit from a 1300cc liquid engine, as on occasions it felt underpowered, due to the extra weight and higher gearing.

  4. LA ESENCIA DE BMW-MOTORRAD ERA EL BOXER, REFRIGERADO A AIRE!!!!!! QUE VENTAJAS TIENE EL BOXER DE AGUA SOBRE OTRA MOTO DEL MERCADO? …….. LAS QUE TIENEN CILINDROS EN LINEA, SE JUSTIFICA, POR LA REFRIGERACION. EL BOXER ERA POR QUE ERA AIRE, SI NO QUE SENTIDO TIENE DEJAMOS LA ESENCIA, EL MITO, LO QUE DISTINGUIA DE LO OTRO,PARA SER COMUN Y SUPERABLE POR LAS DEMAS PIENSEN EN LOS ORIGENES ……. LA TRADICION ES LO QUE LLEVA A SER ESPECIAL. EJ.DUCATI 1200 MULTISTRADA SUPER, MEJOR, MAYOR POTENCIA, HIPER MODERNA, INSUPERABLE,….. Y NO TIENE ESENCIA DE TRAIL,ROBUSTES,QUE DISTINGUIO A BMW DURANTE 32 AÑOS.
    NO
