The wait is now over …… BMW has just launched its NEW liquid cooled boxer at INTERMOT in Cologne! And on which bike? On the R1200GS!!! Loads were waiting for this and loads were skeptical about whether this new liquid cooled engine could leave the same impact in the adventure market as BMW did in the past with its air-cooled boxer!
BMW has thought and studied well its competitors, namely the Ducati Multistrada, the Yamaha Super Tenere, etc …. and worked on deriving a better performance. The riders of the new R1200GS will be enjoying 125hp and 92lb-ft of torque. Unlike some might have thought, BMW didn’t completely put aside its air cooling system but it combined it with this new liquid cooled system. It’s keeping its air cooling but introduced the liquid cooling mainly for those engine parts that are exposed to some excessive stress. Along with this innovation, BMW have added a new electronic throttle and semi-auto ESA that
regulates itself based on the spring travel. They then took some of its already tried technology, that of the K1600, by adding the same system of the Cruise Control and the multi-controller.
This is the beginning of a big chance for BMW and BMW owners. Owners will have to forget those days were it was easy to fix an engine, being air cooled and, who knows, maybe it might also need time to enjoy this reliability the GS enjoys today!
Design? There’s quite some mixed reactions and I fully understand that! The 1 thing I didn’t like for sure is the beak / fender. Hopefully, the Adventure one will have somehow covered 🙂
