London To Magadan Road Of Bones Expedition

BikersCurve is closely monitoring the progress of this year’s London to Magadan Road of Bones expedition organised by Compass Expeditions.

The plan for the 1st week was to get to Budapest, and so they did! Expedition started in London, on the 31st of May, under some very rare blue skies and after some last minute hectic preparations and some off road training by Simon Pavey! Those who know London know what the kind of weather there usually is so this was surely a good start! Guess that was the support, from the weather’s side 🙂 towards this 105 day expedition that will take them all the way to Magadan!

Kick off was from the legendary Ace Cafe and they immediately headed towards the Channel Tunnel train that put them onto the European continent in just over 30 minutes! The 1st night was spent in the city of Brugge, in Belgium, in a unique houseboat accommodation berthed in one of the many canals surrounding this great city! The plan is to cross Europe quite quickly but there’s still some great passes to appreciate! On the way to Budapest, they drove along the Rhine, passed through to admire the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein in the Bavaria, rode through one of Europe’s high altitude passes, along the Grossglockner in Austria, the Franz Josef Glacier, the alpine valleys and the mountains near Salzburg!

Upon arrival in Budapest they had a day rest off the bikes ….. surely needed after such a week full of great riding, emotions and ……. some bike problems too! Yeah, unfortunately, there were some problems along the road, nothing major put enough to delay slightly the programme 🙂 One of the 1200GSA had a oil pressure issue and an 800GS experienced soem rough running issues in the rain!

Next stop ….. Romania, usually overlooked but amazingly spectacular! There again, another rest day off the bikes to appreciate this medieval town of Sighisoara deep in the Transylvania. Back to the bikes, a stop for a visit of the Bran Castle and off for Bucharest. The group then spent the night just round the corner of the 2nd largest building in the world, formlery known as Ceausescu’s Palace, now the Parliament House.
